The Renaissance in Northern Europe

The Renaissance is regarded as a rebirth of interest in art and science which brought changes in different structural changes in Italy. In Italy renaissance basically showed the interest in classical Greek and Roman Culture. Renaissance appeared as a more steady change from the style of the Middle Ages to a more sensible and significant style.

Renaissance began to thrive in places which were at some distance from Italy and other European countries. Flemish artists were well known about work of Michelangelo, Raphael and were influenced by them. Flemish artist developed their own style in 1500s.

Features of Renaissance in Northern Europe

  • At the time of the Middle Ages, small paintings had been popular in Flanders. These paintings consist of styles in illuminated manuscripts. By the mid 1500’s interest in miniatures began to weaken, this lead to development of other design which could draw the interest of public. The large new style of painting came in to existence.
  • New style featured large paintings which were efficient to be displayed in public. Large painting made the artist capable of showing their design in detail. Thus they began to create paintings that were much more realistic and expressive than earlier. New style brought better facial expressions and reality rather than Renaissance painting from earlier styles.
  • As Renaissance art styles moved through northern Europe, they were not fully adapted but several variations were made to them according to the local situations.
  • In England and the northern Netherlands the Reformation brought religious painting to an end completely. In France the School of Fontainebleau was begun by Italians, but succeeded in establishing a durable national style.
  • The large number of surviving classical artworks and monuments encouraged many Italian painters to explore Greek and Roman themes more significantly than northern artists. During 15 century many German paintings tend to be religious.
  • In the 16th century, mythological and other themes from history became more standardized amongst northern and Italian artists. Northern Renaissance painters established new subject matter of landscape and genre painting.

Thus there are several changes which were brought during the renaissance in Northern Europe.
